A Christmas Letter From Zora Sprinkle

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the lighting of the advent candles. This is something my family does starting four Sundays before Christmas. We like to put the wreath out on our dining room table. It has 5 candles, four candles for each week leading up to Christmas and the fifth candle for Christmas. The candles leading to Christmas are hope, peace, joy and love. The fifth candle gets lit on Christmas and represents Jesus, the Light of the World.

My family and I like to light the candles before dinner so we can eat with the candles lit. As we light the candles we sing a song for what the candles represent and say a prayer. For example, the song we sing for hope is, “Light one candle for Hope, one bright candle for Hope. Christ brings Hope to every heart. He comes, He comes.”

Lighting the advent candles helps me connect with Jesus because it helps me get a good opportunity to just pray and thank him for what he has done and to help me to continue to grow closer to him.
